What are the safety standards for installing additional locks on elevator doors?

1. General Principles & Regulatory Framework

Mandatory Requirements:

  • Never replace the elevator's built-in safety locking systems (mechanical locks, electrical interlocks, Door Lock Monitoring)
  • Only add security locks as supplementary protection to existing safety features
  • Must comply with:
    • ASME A17.1/CSA B44 (North America) The American Society of Mechanical Engineers
    • GB 7588 (China)
    • EN 81 (Europe)
    • NFPA 101 (Fire Safety)
    • Local building codes and elevator regulations

2. Key Safety Requirements for Additional Locks

2.1 Fire Safety & Emergency Accessibility

Critical requirements for electrical locks:
  • Automatic unlocking upon fire alarm activation
  • Fail-safe design: Unlock when power fails
  • Central override capability from fire command center
  • Two-way communication system near locked doors connecting to attended station
  • Emergency lighting on both sides of locked doors
Mechanical lock requirements:
  • Must be operable by emergency personnel using universal elevator key (e.g., Gamewell 25460)
  • Emergency keys must be clearly marked and accessible only to authorized personnel

2.2 Compatibility with Elevator Safety Systems

  • No interference with Door Lock Monitoring (DLM)
  • Must not bypass or disable electrical safety interlocks
  • Shall not prevent the elevator from operating normally when properly unlocked
  • Cannot impede door reopening devices or safety sensors

2.3 Design & Performance Standards

Strength & durability:
  • Locks must maintain integrity under 300N force applied to door surfaces
  • Materials must be fire-resistant and corrosion-proof
